Our Community

A New Emergency Room For Lions Gate Hospital

Like a family outgrows a house the Lions Gate Hospital Emergency Room has outgrown its home. The E.R. has not had a proper redevelopment since it was built 23 years ago. In 1983 the ER was built to a North Shore population of 140,000 with approximately 20,000 ER visits a year. Today it serves a population of 190,000 with 42,000 ER visits per year and it is projected by 2017 our population will be 227,000 and there will be approximately 47,000 to 55,000 ER visits per year.

My family and I have had our share of visits to the ER over the eighteen years we have lived here. While we have ultimately received good care I have always thought it was a poorly designed and inadequate ER for such a large and prosperous community like ours. I have personally made a contribution to the ER campaign and I have volunteered to Co-Chair the Real Estate Division of the campaign in an effort to raise money from my industry.

The ER touches all of our lives on the North Shore. Few things in life are more fundamental than our health. When we invest in our health and our community's health we invest in what sustains us individually and collectively. The cost of the redevelopment is $15 million. The government has committed $5 million and The Lions Gate Foundation is working with our community to raise $10 million over the next 2 years.

I encourage you to support this project with your own personal contributions and to approach your employers, friends and family to support the program as well. A donation of any size is appreciated. A donation of $1,000.00 or more will include your name on a commemorative wall in the New E.R. To make your pledge you may call The Foundation at 604.984.5785, log onto https://springerssl.netnation.com/~lghfound/files/donations.html, or call me at 604.220.2020 and I will mail you a pledge card.

Together we can make it happen!

The Shirley Clarke Scholarship

Every year Shirley awards a deserving North Vancouver Secondary School graduate a scholarship for post-secondary studies. This year's recipient, Michelle Cuthbert, was a top student at Handsworth who excelled academically and gave back to her community. Congratulations!
